About Us

Registered Non-Profit organisation #K2020721650

AT Lesedi Mental Health Outreach was born from the tragic experience of the Gauteng Department of Health "Marathon Project" that resulted in the deaths of over 140 mental health care users and the suffering of thousands more.

Our organization was founded by family members directly affected by this tragedy who were involved in opposing its implementation and advocating for proper care and treatment of those with psychosocial disabilities.

We believe in the principle of Ubuntu - that our humanity is inextricably bound up in that of others - and we work to provide the family support that is essential for the holistic reintegration of people with psychosocial illnesses into society.

Our Mission & Vision

Our Vision

To provide loving family or "surrogate" support to people with psychosocial illnesses, serving the ultimate goal of seeing these individuals reintegrated into the broader society with respect and dignity. To increase community involvement, understanding, and acceptance of people with psychosocial illnesses.

Our Mission

Our target group includes those without families classified as "Involuntary/Assisted Mental Health Care Users" receiving care, treatment and rehabilitation at care centres and other facilities. We provide both material and psychosocial support to both individual members of this target group and the institutions as a whole.

Our Story

Born from tragedy, driven by compassion

The global trend towards deinstitutionalization of people with psychosocial illnesses has come a long way since they were treated like outcasts with no human rights. However, the treatment of those subjected to the Gauteng Mental Health Directorate "Marathon Project" transfer from safe havens like Life Esidimeni care centers was archaic and reminiscent of past injustices.

This organization was born out of the experience of the inhumane "Marathon Project" by family members who were directly affected and involved as Family representatives/Committee to oppose its implementation. The project resulted in the untimely, torturous deaths of over 140 loved ones, with over a thousand others suffering from starvation, dehydration and displacement.

Our founder, Andrew Pietersen, together with other noteworthy Family Committee members, was involved in organizing family representatives, arranging demonstrations, creating awareness, engaging with the Department of Health, reporting to the Health Ombudsman, relocating patients to safe places, and negotiating the terms for the Arbitration process.

Our Impact

Transforming lives through compassion and support

"Hyena is Genet's uncle and he was one of the persons affected by the GDOH Marathon Project. Genet began to see a visible change in his uncle's state of mental health since all these frequent visits, outings and activities."
- The Hyena's Story
"Eagle was eventually compensated with the Award due to the LE Arbitration ruling and has since improved to the point of being discharged and is back in Lesotho where he is running his own real estate business."
- The Eagle's Story
"The Antelopes had family visits arranged, received personalized gifts according to their interests, and were included in celebrations. One of the Antelopes' family members was eventually traced and has since visited several times."
